Life Begins at 40

Lifting weights as you get older doesn’t need to be scary. Whether you’re looking to begin your lifting journey after 40 or are just looking for ways to maximize your gains in middle age, we’re providing you with a guide to get there.

When it comes to training while you’re at the tail end of your prime, all the same rules apply as before — they just apply a little bit more than when you were in your 20s. Gone are the days of maxing out every session and going to bed at 3:00 a.m. to rest up for that 7:00 a.m. lifting session. And you’ll definitely want to look into swapping traditional deadlifts and squats for less-demanding (but no less effective) variations like trap bar deadlifts and front squats.

There’s nothing stopping you from achieving significant goals as long as you listen to your body and use a little of that wisdom you’ve picked up along the way.

Creatine for You

You know creatine, you take creatine, you know you need to take creatine. But have you ever looked at all the different types of creatine, or do you just buy whichever giant tub is on sale and hope for the best?

Here’s the rub: There are nine types of creatine, and, odds are, one of them is better for your personal physiology than the others.

The most popular type (and the one you most likely take) is creatine monohydrate, which probably works fine for you. Or, perhaps you were taking it before it wreaked all sorts of havoc on your stomach. That’s where an alternative like creatine hydrochloride (or creatine HCL) comes in. See, each individual absorbs these different creatines differently, and some have benefits that others don’t. (And some claim they have benefits that can’t be verified but do come with a higher price tag.)

We put the nine types of creatine under the microscope below so you can make the most informed choice possible.

Arnold Classic Set to Go

It’s never too early to plan for the best day of the year. The organizers of the Arnold Strongman Classic agree with this statement and have released the list of competitors scheduled to appear at the contest in March 2024.

The roster is littered with huge names. Perhaps the biggest among them is Hafthor Björnsson, returning to strongman after recouping from a torn pec he suffered earlier in the year. Since his hiatus from the sport a few years back, the likes of Martin Licis and Mitchell Hooper have conquered the heaviest contest of the year and look to repeat their respective feats next year. Check out all the names and get your popcorn ready for what looks to be an extraordinary event.

  • In what was an epic day in the day, eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman and four-time World’s Strongest Man Brian Shaw got together to blast their biceps.

  • Equipped lifting is alive and well in the IPF women’s division, recently culminating in another world record being set by Ukraine’s 84kg phenom Daria Rusanenko. Watch it here.

  • Supplement companies may love to obfuscate when it comes to what’s really in their products, but if you stick to this list of “clean” protein powders, you’ll never have to wonder what you’re mixing into your shaker cup.
