Jesus Olivares Becomes a King
Like a shark in the water, Jesus Olivares (+120KG) had been in pursuit of the all-time raw world record total for a while. And like the famous marine predator, he closed on the powerlifting milestone with jarring ferociousness.
By the end of last weekend's Sheffield Powerlifting Championships, Olivares had accumulated a 1,152.5-kilogram (2,540.8-pound) raw total. The mark surpasses the world record in the +120-kilogram division previously held by Daniel Bell by 25 kilograms (55.1 pounds). Folks, to be 100 percent clear: Over 55 pounds!
We are witnessing a new king in the superheavyweight division. Long may he reign.

History
The Folktale of Eugen Sandow
These days, Eugen Sandow is best known as the model for the Mr. Olympia trophy. But before his name graced bodybuilding's greatest prize, Sandow was a tall tale in his own right. Well, more like a strong tale.
In an in-depth look at Sandow's power in the late 19th century, we diagrammed just how strong he was. For example, he could do chin-ups with a single finger. And, according to lore, he could carry a piano and pianist across an entire stage.
Sandow truly was a Goliath before the advent of modern lifting.
